SIXTH ALBUM in a long line of winners and no loosers. Retaining every molecule of pomposity, the Heep move in on their kill with precision and power drawing from a rich history of heaviousity spearheaded by Hensley's swirling Hammond Organ, Mick Box's blistering wah-wah guitar and David Byron's ludicrously operatic vocal gymnastics - and I say that with love.
At the time they were members of the big four - Sabbath Purple, Zeppelin and...the Heep. Rampaging heavy rock dinosaurs trampling from continent to continent raizing concert halls to the ground and clogging the airwaves with colourful and frightening album length tracks. It was a great time and, thankfully, I saw all of the above bands in their heyday including Heep promoting this very album.
'Sweet Freedom' is a classic make no mistake. Every nuance is extremely well thought out, every riff calculated to create maximum impact and the quality of songs are just outrageous. As a working unit and forever on tour, it amazes me that they ever found time to write stuff this good. There are some crackers here such as 'Dreamer', 'One Day', 'Sweet Freedom' and possibly Heeps best known track of all 'Stealin'. Side two is a corker on mass with 'If I Had The Time', the unrelenting 'Seven Stars', the melodromatic 'Circus' and arguably the albums best track 'Pilgrim' a l-o-o-o-n-g epic where all the parts come into focus and the band really dig in deep - every member pulling their weight and working like a well oiled machine.
Possibly the last truly great Heep opus and one that should be in every lover of early seventies hard rock collection.
Almost impossible to find with a crisp clean cover - this one is a beauty. You'll not find a better example I can assure you.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
Pressing: Bronze, UK, 1973
Vinyl: Clean and shiny condition. A few extremely light spindle marks on labelsand only faint signs of use - best copy I have seen in years. Playback is crystal clear with dynamic sound reproduction. Grades as MINT-!
Cover: Again, virtually no signs of any use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated and richly crafted tri-fold cover. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is perfectly square, straight, stiff and totally uncrushed. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 42 years after release. Grades as MINT-!
