Uriah Heep : Salisbury 1Y1 / 2Y1 1st press 1971 Vertigo

This first Vertigo pressing plays to an excellent standard with only minimal intrusion.  In fact there are no clicks or pops, just a little inner groove distortion on a couple of tracks is the only real issue.  Overall the clarity, depth and power of the audio is very impressive.

The cover has been very well looked after for once and has only a little shelf wear and the original Vertigo inner sleeve is also in excellent condition.

Visual description

The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a strong glossy look with no surface wear or 'bag rash'.  Under a bright light you can see some hairlines and there is one on S2 that is just a little more obvious but it isn't long.  The Vertigo labels are unmarked and just have some spindle wear, not an excessive amount though.

Play grading

The 'heavy' intro on 'Bird Of Prey' is close to perfect with just one minor tick and Byron's opening vocal has no background at all, great clarity of sound.  The following instrumental passage again plays with sublime clarity and power and the next vocal has no intrusion either.  The final instrumental / vocal sections keep up the standard with no ticks, clicks, pops or static and overall Near Mint is more than deserved.

The quiet intro on 'The Park' plays so clearly with only a small number of very quiet statics - honestly so quiet and totally non-intrusive, each note is still so clean and precise.  The opening four verses then play beautifully with only a couple of barely audible statics and the relatively quiet 'jazzy' instrumental plays with stunning clarity also with only a couple of minor ticks, you can easily hear the birdsong!  The final vocal plays perfectly and Near Mint is again fair although it has to be said the vast majority is much better than that!

The intro on 'Time To Live' plays with genuine power and depth and... no interference.  The opening two verses play with great quality as does the mid instrumental section and the final vocal section has no intrusion either.  There is perhaps just a minor touch of inner groove distortion on this track but I only mention it to be 100% complete with my grading.  However, it is so so minor.  The long fade out has no background by the way.  Near Mint

The acoustic intro / first verse on 'Lady In Black' play with perfect clarity and there is just one light tick during the first 'Ah...' vocal.  From then on it plays so well and it's hard to find fault.  There is a hint of inner groove distortion mainly towards the end but again in my opinion if does intrude on the quality of the listen.  There are no clicks or pops that's for sure.  Overall I think Near Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The intro on 'High Priestess' plays very clearly with only the bare minimum of light static and as the volume increases the playback is superb.  Hensley's opening vocal is flawless and it continues to play with that familiar Heep power and depth and no interference.  Great work from Box as per usual.  An Ex+ intro but Near Mint from then onwards.

The intro on the classic 'Salisbury' plays with great clarity and then the first quieter section has only a couple of very quiet ticks.  The next louder part of the intro does have a little static distortion and then as Baker comes in the audio is stunning.  The opening four verses again play so clearly and the first part of the following instrumental, the bass section, plays with great quality also.  It continues to play to a very high standard - there are a couple of lengthy quiet sections here and yet the clarity is incredible, no background at all!  The depth and resonance on the audio is so impressive and that is helped considerably by Newton's strong bass sound and the fact that there is no 'muddiness' to the sound.  Byron's next vocal is perfect although there is just a little distortion during the There's a line in a rhyme verse, nothing major though.  There is then more superb work from Box which plays so well with nothing getting in the way of the audio and the final two verses play to perfection.  The quiet ending has very little static and then the 'crescendo' is strong and dynamic with hardly any distortion - and then just minimal static on the final couple of notes.  Overall Ex+ is the right call but there are many sections that are stronger than that.

The Gatefold & Vertigo Inner Sleeve

This cover is so often found in poor condition due to not being laminated but this one has been very well looked after and has only a little shelf wear.  The edges have some rubbing but not an excessive amount and the wide spine is very clean with only some wear at the bottom and even less at the top.  Only one of the opening edges has some handling wear (at the top of the front cover), the other one is very clean and the corners are in pretty good shape.  The front cover is stunning with only a couple of minor specks and the back cover is one of the cleanest I have ever seen, it's rarely as good as this!  The inside of the gatefold is in lovely condition also with only very minimal spotting.  A very strong example overall.

The Vertigo inner (dated 0171) is in excellent order with no side splits or tears, just some age related fading around the edges and a little creasing.

Postage & Packaging

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
