Uriah Heep : Very 'Eavy...Very 'Umble 1Y1 / 2Y1

This is another Vertigo first pressing I am selling and is another that plays with stunning clarity and power and barely any intrusion.  I heard just one light click and a handful of insignificant ticks and when you consider this album is now over 50 years old it is clear to see that it has been so well preserved.  There is barely any distortion and in a sense it's the quieter sections that are more impressive.  'Come Away Melinda' is easily one of the finest version I have encountered and 'Wake Up...' is breathtaking and plays with perfect clarity throughout.  The vinyl is visually in superb condition also with only one hairline on S2 that is a little obvious.

As this is a genuine first press it has the large swirl and the song writing / publishing credits on the S2 label.  'Real Turned On' and 'Walking In Your Shadow' have been swapped around on the inside the gatefold.    It was also released with a laminated cover.

The gatefold is in excellent condition with only very minimal wear and the original swirl inner is also in excellent shape.

Visual grading

The vinyl is in lovely condition and still has a very impressive glossy sheen.  There are no scratches and S1 in particular is stunning!  I can only find a small number of very faint sleeve removal hairlines and S2 is almost as good with just one hairline mark that is a little more obvious but has no impact on the audio.  The run out grooves are very clean with only a small number of very faint marks and the Vertigo labels have no marking or writing just some spindle wear.

Play grading

The intro on the classic 'Gypsy' has no 'background' and Byron's opening vocal is equally as strong.  It continues to play with sublime clarity and power and Hensley's organ solo is a prime example of that.  There is no distortion and the quiet section that follows has only minimal light static and a couple of ticks.  The next 'heavy' section is faultless as is the final vocal and the closing section is of the same standard.  A superb opener that has to grade as Near Mint

'Walking In Your Shadow' plays with imperious quality from the get go and this quality is maintained throughout with no ticks, clicks or pops.  There is no 'muddiness' to the audio, just that strong deep typical Heep sound that is even more impressive on a Vertigo first pressing.  Box's mid solo is flawless and the remainder does not disappoint either.  So far this classic album is playing rather well!  This is Mint- with a perfect fade out also.

The intro on 'Come Away Melinda' has barely any static and just one light click and one tick just before the vocal begins.  Byron's first vocal then plays beautifully with no intrusion and it proceeds in the same way with a clarity that is just STUNNING!  There is no 'background' and even as the volume increases the quality does not diminish.  Byron's vocal throughout has such depth and strength and to the end this classic plays with genuine precision.  Even with the one click near the beginning I truly believe this deserves a Near Mint grade.

'Lucy's Blues' ends the side with 'high end' audio with near perfect audio.  There is just one very dull sound right at the end but it is so quiet you could easily miss it.  Aside from that every groove plays with wonderful precision and in my opinion this is still worthy of a Mint- grade.

The quiet intro on 'Dreammare' has barely any static and only 3/4 minor static ticks.  As the volume increases the playback is faultless and the opening vocal section is 'as new'.  From then on it plays with great power and depth and no interference.  I have played it twice now and I cannot stress enough how good a version this is!  The sonic quality is stunning and the end vocal section is breathtaking!  The intro is Near Mint- and the remainder is Mint- of that I am confident.

'Real Turned On' is immense!  A minimal hint of distortion at the start but you barely notice it and it is not intrusive.  From then on it plays like it was pressed yesterday not over 50 years ago!  It plays with tremendous power and definition throughout and Mint- is again deserved.

The intro on 'I'll Keep On Trying' more than keeps up the standard and Byron's opening vocal is faultless.  It continues to play with supreme power and the 'quieter' mid section is another example of the superb clarity - not even one dust tick.  Box's work then plays with terrific power and the remainder of this classic is 'as new' with no sign of any interference.  Another Mint- track, it does not get much better than this!

The intro on 'Wake Up (Set Your Sights)' plays perfectly and the opening vocal is just as strong.  The first half plays so clearly and for once there is no distortion.  Oh and no interference before I forget!  The quieter section has no 'background' at the start and continues with a clarity you so rarely hear on the Vertigo pressings.  No ticks, clicks, pops or static the playback is exceptional.  As Byron's vocal returns there is no let up in quality and the brief percussive end has no 'background' either.  This may well be the finest version of this classic that I have ever listened to and if the first section is stunning then the quieter second half is stunning and then some!  There cannot be many Mint versions around today but we certainly have one here!

In summary this first pressing plays to a 'high end' standard with just one light click and a handful of light ticks.  The clarity could hardly be any more impressive.  This is an album that is generally found heavily played and this vinyl has certainly been played a number of times but it is patently obvious it has always been carefully looked after and only played on top quality equipment.  It has lost none of its original sonic quality and for once has barely any of the distortion that you so often find.  This is a 'high octane' album in many sections and that lack of distortion is a rarity.  A superb vinyl with a very impressive cover also.

The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve

The laminated cover is in great condition with only very minimal shelf wear and nothing that stands out.  The edges are close to perfect with only a couple of tiny 'specks' and the spine is super clean and remains 100% legible.  The corners only have some minor wear/creasing and the opening edge is has hardly any handling wear.  The front cover has no laminate damage and only a small number of faint creases around the edges which is common plus some minor creasing in the corners as stated.  The back cover is equally as good with no marking and the inside of the gatefold is in fantastic condition for a change!  No sticking/marking on either of the panels.  A fine example overall.

The original poly-lined swirl inner dated 1070 is in excellent shape with no side splits and just one barely visible tear on the central 'window'.  It has only a little age related fading around the edges and some creasing here and there.
