OP•3mo agoIn 1969 I was assigned to run the radio section, Directorate of Advertising under Recruiting Service at Randolph AFB, Tx. The Directorate was responsible for creating all the advertising for the Air Force. The next year the All Volunteer Force came into being. When I arrived they had two shows: Serenade In Blue (Air Force band at Bolling AFB, D.C. ..big band music and Country Music Time. The boss decided we were missing out on programs that would appeal to the 18-24 age group and needed to fill the gap. I called Jack Brown, Chief AFRTS (I was a broadcaster 79171) , Los Angeles. Jack suggested a personality, Wolfman Jack to fill the rock genre. His program was aired overseas to Armed Forces Radio outlets. He further suggested Roger Carroll, a KMPC personality to fill the contemporary slot. Roland Bynum would fill the Soul slot . I had blanket orders for “any point in the U.S. And return). Jack had given me Wolfman's phone number and I called him and set up a trip to meet him. He lived in Beverly Hills, just down the street from Lucille Ball. When I arrived at his house I made a proposal. He was to record one 30 minute show per week. We were able to pay Union Scale, $ 250, per show. But....we would put him on 3,000 plus radio stations in the U.S. I gave him an Air Force spot to insert in the show. He said he would send me a demo tape shortly. We received the demo and sent a copy to DOD for approval. Finally, we heard back from DOD. The show was rejected because “the host was too ethnic”. Major C. Brown (my boss), and I decided to send the unauthorized demo out to some 4,000 radio stations. We included a mail back card for their comments. Two weeks later the cards began to arrive...several mail bags full of comments. Station program directors were eager to start airing the show and added it would be in their Prime Time programming. We contacted DOD and explained that “we are not recruiting Colonels” and requested that they approve the show because it represented more than one million dollars of free air time. They agreed and we were off and running. The show was a tremendous success and ran for three years. Subsequent to that, Wolfman's career took off like a rocket. The rest is history.
