Description

I have no idea what this lovely record was doing in a dark corner of a second-hand-furniture shop in Edgbaston, Birmingham UK, in approximately 1967, but that’s where I found it.

I was so skint back in those days, I could only afford one disc from the pile, and I often wonder what other goodies I left there.

Any hoo, here it is for your delectation.

It’s on the prestigious and collectable US “Gennett” label, number 5060A/B and it was recorded in Noo Yoik.

One side is by “Ted Claire Snappy Bits Band” directed by a mis-spelled Charles A Matson (the label calls him “Watson”). The band, if Mr Google’s photographs are to be believed, seems to have been a bunch of African-American vaudevillians, although some authorities insist that they are white! They are performing “Laughin’ Cryin’ Blues” which was writ by (Porter?) Grainger and Ricketts. It was recorded on Jan 31st 1923.

The other side features “Aggravatin’ Papa” by Mandy Lee and Ladd’s Black Aces. Most authorities insist that this was a white band (although there are pictures that indicate otherwise.. fake nooz?). They we probably, possibly, more-or-less, Phil Napoleon on cornet, Charlie Panelli on trombone, Jimmy Lytell on clarinet, Frank Signorelli on the ol’ joanna and Jack Roth on drums. This side was recorded on the 16th of Feb 1923.

The vocalist “Mandy Lee” made several sides for Gennett etc and is now though to be white chantoose Vaughn de Leath (real name Leonore Vonderlieth.. a skilled ukulele player, and thus a thoroughly worthwhile human being.. see my eBay identity).

She’s actually rather good.

You can hear both sides of other people’s copies of this desirable record, uploaded by kind folks on You Tube, so check ‘em out.

This is the original USA 78rpm disc and it plays beautifully.

It is remarkably clean for 103 years old and has no severe marks or flesh wounds.

I can honestly grade it as a very strong VG+++ or better, and I don’t think you’ll ever need to upgrade from this nice collectable example.

Buy now, before the inevitable Armageddon that we’re all hurtling towards destroys everything that we hold dear.

 I am not a dealer.

I am just a very old bloke thinning out his lifetime collection of STUFF before the floor collapses (or I do).

I'm selling most of this stuff for much less

than I paid for it.

What a great business plan (I don't think)!

I am certainly NOT INTERESTED IN PROFIT..

..and indeed, seldom make any!

What little profit I do make goes to help

a very splendid Wildlife Rescue Charity.

The item in the photograph is the item you will get.

I have described everything to the best of my ability, and it looks in excellent condition to me.

Please check the photographs to decide for yourself.

NO OVERSEAS bidders please.

And NO OVERSEAS bidders using UK addresses please.

I am a simple sort, and I want my buyers to be happy. If there is any kind of problem, I like to sort it out personally. I can’t do this if you’re thousands of miles away!
