Description

Laboratorio della Quercia? Don't let the dry title of this double LP put you off! Laboratorio della Quercia features a 20-piece band of incredible firepower, gathered together on two hot nighst in Rome during the summer of 1978. A dazzling blend of Americans [Steve Lacy, Steve Potts, Roswell Rudd, Kent Carter etc.] and Europeans [Kenny Wheeler, Evan Parker, Tristan Honsinger, Enrico Rava, Massimo Urbani, Roberto Bellatella, etc.] all filling the Rome evening sky with a breathtaking package of sounds.

Take the comments from Jazz Archive: "it's hard to properly absorb the enormity of the moment ... They've chosen to use the largest possible canvas for their explorations, breaking out eleven horns for its impressive frontline. ... The theorems this 'laboratory' tests involve the audience's pleasure, stretching and remolding and occasionally breaking conventional forms in order to find new ways to pump excitement into ...Jazz. ... Throughout there's a cohesive texture, internal logic and pointed restraint ... "

The vinyl is in VG+ condition, the sleeve in VG condition – all the copies of this double LP produced in Italy seem to suffer from poor adhesive, so the lower joints of the 'gatefold' cover are poorly glued: I shall leave this to the buyer to address, as some purists don't wish any extraneous repairs to be attempted on original artefacts from nearly 50 years ago!

Copies of this important record of twenty top jazz players have sold on Discogs for a median price of over £55. We have moved house, and no longer have the ability to play or the space to house my collection of jazz and free-jazz LPs, so I am starting this auction at a very reasonable £35.

The double LP will be carefully packaged in a special LP mailer and sent within the UK by first-class recorded delivery for a postage and packing charge of £7.95. We should probably talk about insurance en route ....
