VLADIMIR USSACHEVSKY / OTTO LUENING / MEL POWELL
Music for electronic and older instruments LP
- Original 1st Edition
- Label :CRI=Composers' Recordings / Usa
- Condition :ex / vg++ (cover/vinyl)
Mega-rare lp of early electronic music released in the 60's in the US by CRI. Features the early sonic experiments of the great electronic music pioneers in America: Otto Luening, Vladimir Ussachevsky and Mel Powell covering the work from 1960 to 1963. Ussachevsky and Luening were the first ever to perform live electronic music in a performance at the New York Arts Museum back in 1952. On this record, Ussachevsky & Luening experiment with tape manipulation techniques and electroacoustic transformations(by processing sounds of a korean gong, trombone and xylophone). Furthermore on "Wireless Fantasy" they use as basic source materials wireless code signals with the help of radio pioneer Mr Ed G. Raser, who owned an impressive collection of wireless radio gear in his museum in Trenton, NJ. Mel Powell in his "Events for Tape Recorder" uses three pre-recorded voices and electronically generated sounds, making what he calls a "poem-collage", some early form of text-sound composition. A piece of electronic music's early history.
Ussachevsky was born a Russian-Manchurian prince but fled to the US after the communist revolution; while teaching at Columbia he was placed in charge of maintaining their newly acquired tape recorder, which he began experimenting with as a compositional tool in the early 1950s. He was influenced by Edgard Varese and Roger Sessions, taught Charles Wuorinen and Ilhan Mimaroglu, and co-founded the Columbia Princeton Electronic Music Center where he pioneered electronic music along with Otto Luening, Bulent Arel, Milton Babbitt, and Mario Davidovsky and influenced contemporaries like John Cage, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Bernard Parmegiani, Tod Dockstader, Earle Brown, Jon Appleton, Dick Raaijmakers, Rune Lindblad, etc.
