In 1973, then pop artist Todd Rundgren decided that he wanted to have a stab at making a progressive rock record. To do that, he formed a new band, Utopia; a year later, their debut album landed in record stores. Here reissued on heavy, audiophile-friendly wax, the set sees the combo offer up dizzyingly expansive tracks that draw on a disparate variety of styles (think jazz-rock, blues and funk-rock as well as progressive rock and art-rock), frequently change shape midway through, and offer a showcase for the band members' obvious musical talents. The album's undisputed highlight is closer 'Ikon', a 30-minute mini rock-opera that sounds like Steely Dan making prog rock.
