Baron Elmo proudly presents a rare vinyl treasure from the discography of alt-rock giants Modest Mouse, with their frontman Isaac Brock doing business as UGLY CASANOVA: Sharpen Your Teeth, a double LP issued in 2002 by the Sub Pop label, now long out of print in this format. Ugly Casanova was Brock's attempt to try new methods and genres outside the boundaries of Modest Mouse, in which he performed on a wider variety of instruments and deployed a more stripped down recording style. Brock's cover story for the whole enterprise was that, while on tour with Modest Mouse, he encountered an eccentric character named Edgar Graham. During this time, Graham and the band cut a few songs together before the mysterious stranger completely disappeared. In a supposed attempt to get Graham to resurface, Brock took the recordings to Sub Pop Records, re-worked them in the studio, and had them released as Sharpen Your Teeth. Brock has since revealed that Edgar Graham was "a fiction thing that I started awhile back to eliminate myself from the band." Luckily, the results are solid indeed; another outlet for the quirky genius of Isaac's popcraft and a must for Mouse fans. Three sides of music and an etched fourth side pressed on heavyweight vinyl, tucked inside a thick gatefold jacket with a lyric insert. The records show moderate wear, but look good and play quite nicely; the cover is in great shape but for a couple of tiny corner dents.

The story behind Sharpen Your Teeth is odd yet plausible: a mentally unstable character named Edgar Graham (calling himself Ugly Casanova) met up with Modest Mouse, followed them around on tour, recorded some songs, gave the recordings to labels, and then mysteriously disappeared. Songs on tapes discovered by Sub Pop were later recorded by Issac Brock of Modest Mouse in hopes that Graham would resurface. The first solo record from the singer/guitarist, Sharpen Your Teeth, cuts into raw indie rock with spells of country and folk, while allowing Brock to explore a varying scope of sounds. He gets help from Brian Deck (whose production credits include Tortoise and the Sea and Cake), Tim Rutili of Red Red Meat, and Pall Jenkins of the Black Heart Procession. Ranging from heartfelt acoustic numbers ("Cat Faces") to outright bizarreness with grating vocals ("Diamonds on the Face of Evil"), there's no doubt that the mood sometimes coincides with the enigmatic Graham.
