Baron Elmo proudly presents a precious vinyl artifact for fans of alt-country titans UNCLE TUPELO: Still Feel Gone & March 16-20, 1992, a double lp issued in 1992 on the Rockville label. This set generously compiled the band’s second and third albums into a single vinyl release with completely new artwork in a gatefold jacket. At this point, Uncle Tupelo were essentially a trio – duelling frontmen Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar, drummer Mike Heidorn and a revolving cast of supporting musicians. The very different approaches of Jeff and Jay only added to the excitement of the band’s music, with Tweedy’s sweet folk sensibilities butting up against Farrar’s raucous, bare-knuckle roots-rock. Their early sound was tough country rock, lightly flavored with the exhilarating aggression of punk; and Still Feels Gone very much embodies that era of Uncle Tupelo. The second record in this set, March 16-20, 1992, recorded a mere nine months later, was something else again. Here the band makes an all-acoustic move, marked by their renditions of five traditional folk and country songs such as the Louvin Brothers classic “Atomic Power.” Suffused in religion and political activism, these are songs of protest and haunting stories that honestly depict the tribulations of common folk. In lesser hands, such a undertaking could easily have sounded plain silly… but Uncle Tupelo lives this music, feels it in their blood, and the rough-hewn beauty of their performances rings out like a hammer on steel. These are both killer albums, and they have a certain warmth and intimacy on vinyl that no CD can ever hope to match. This set has been out of print for more than fifteen years. Both records show very slight wear, but look great and plays beautifully. The cover is in fine shape but for a bit of fraying around the middle of the right hand edge, and what appears to be a hint of moisture damage around the upper left-hand corner (we've had this record in our stock for at least six years and only just now noticed this, so it's pretty subtle).
