(1987 Obituary)

The Rev. J.R. Outlaw Sr ., 82, founder and pastor of Jesus Name Church, which is affiliated with the

United Pentecostal Church, died April 4, 1987, in Phoenix. The Rev. Mr. Outlaw, a Phoenix resident, was born in Concord, Ark. He founded the church at 19th

and Hadley streets in 1940, six months after he moved to Arizona. The church, now called the Church of Jesus, is now at 13246 N. 23rd Ave.

He also had been assistant pastor at Sunshine Mission and Grand Avenue Missions from 1935 to 1936.

Before founding the church, the Rev. Mr. Outlaw had conducted evangelistic tours throughout the

Southwest and had been pastor of the Pentecostal Church in Jesus' Name, which has since been

changed to another denomination.

Survivors include his wife, Sadie, daughter, Lee Thompson; and son, the Rev. James Outlaw Jr.

Cleopatra June Outlaw (2010 obituary)

Cleopatra June Outlaw went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, July 28, 2010. She is preceded in death by her husband James Outlaw Jr.. Cleo was born in Cloudy, Oklahoma on October 11, 1933 and moved to Phoenix, Arizona with her family in 1945. She first attended the Jesus Name Church in 1945 where she met and fell in love with the eventual Pastor, James Outlaw Jr. They were married in 1950 and spent the rest of their lives serving Jesus. Cleo loved to sing and was a member of the choral group “Sunshine Choral Aires” for many years. She also authored and produced a weekly bulletin for the church for over 40 years and ran a nursery school at the church. She was an Executive Secretary at Valley National Bank at age 16 and graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1950. Cleo was a devoted wife, caring mother and grandmother and kind friend that everyone could only hope to have. She was truly one of the most kind-hearted and gentle people who ever lived. Cleo had a sense of humor that never failed to bring a smile or laugh and she never met a soul whose life she didn’t touch in some way. She has been, and will continue to be, an inspiration to her family and she will be remembered in the hearts and memories of all of her loved ones.
