In 1949 the Urshans, Paslays, and our party (Kinzie Evangelistic party) formed the Gospel Melodies Record Company. We practiced at either Calvary Tabernacle or the church in Cincinnati (Pastored by F.E Curts). All of our records were recorded at the Herzog Studios in Cincinnati except the long plays, which were made at United Studios in Detroit. Mr. Herzog and his chief engineer Charley had both been engineers at W.L.W. radio station in Cincinnati.

We spent three days practicing and two days recording. These were tremendous times of fellowship. Later Harry Slattery joined the company and that added the Davis Sisters to our group. Many others recorded with us including Helen Anderson Cole, Verle Pilant, Hugh Rose, and a quartet we called the Gospel Melodies Quartet, which included Buddy Guidroz, James Hosch, Hugh Rose and George L. Glass, Jr. When we began, our records were 78 rpm’s. Then 45 rpm’s became popular; and a short time later the long plays took over.

Due to other pressing duties, we dissolved the Gospel Melodies Record Company in 1964. It never was a money-making venture but interesting and rewarding.

Rev. Harry D. Slattery’s widow

Christeena Slattery,

100, of Muncie, passed away February 9, 2018. She was born July 1, 1917 in Indianapolis, to the late Goble and Gladys Moore Davis. Christeena was a 1935 graduate of Arsenal Tech High School and married Rev. Harry D. Slattery, August 8, 1938. He preceded her in death July 14, 1992. She was employed for several years at the Ball Store in Muncie as a sales clerk. Christeena and her sister Pauline, sang together on many radio broadcasts as the Davis Sisters. She was a member of Fall Creek Apostolic Church in Middletown, IN and Victory Temple in Muncie.

Visitation will be Monday, February 12, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Victory Temple, 3708 W. 26th St., Muncie, and Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at the church.

Christeena is survived by her loving daughter, Rhonda L. Nannie (Richard); granddaughters, Deserre D. Kemble (Jeff) and Rikki D. Nannie (William Balfour); nine great-grandchildren, Elijah, Serena, Savannah, and Lance Kemble, Lauren and Tyler Criswell, and Malia, Willow, and Brandon Balfour. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry C. Criswell; grandchildren, Selena and Laramie Criswell; great-granddaughter, Sierra Criswell; and her beloved sister, Pauline Visker.

The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Dinwiddie, St. Vincent Hospice, Joan Allen and Shirley Johnson, for their excellent care and concern for Christeena.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Fall Creek Apostolic Church or to Victory Temple.

Final care and arrangements are entrusted to Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, Indianapolis.
