Description
ARCHIE SHEPP: Kwanza. Used vintage LP, gatefold, cut-out, ex-radio copy in Very Good+/Good condition. ABC Impulse! Recs. LP Catalog # AS-9262; recorded 1968/69; released 1974
Condition: Vinyl doesn’t have any significant scratches, only very light scuffing. Label design predominantly black, not the orange/black combo of later Impulse! releases and reissues. Jacket has seen better days. Good deal of shelf wear on vertical surfaces (as opposed to bottom), mild ring impressions, a crude “cut-out” round hole in upper left corner as seen from front. Inside of gatefold still a nice bright yellow. Two white stick-on labels on back of jacket indicate when it was received at the radio station. Original paper inner sleeve included, with the “cut-out” hole present there as well.
Behind the Music: The lineup of musicians for this project is amazing, but apparently ABC Impulse! was not willing or able to issue it until a few years had passed. Complete Personnel listing can be researched online; I’ll just mention here a few of the heavy cats: Leon Thomas, Woody Shaw, James Spaulding, Cedar Walton, Walter Booker, Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie. There are five selections, most of them lengthy. They play on the theme of African roots, though no tune called “Kwanza” [usually spelled “Kwanzaa” these days] is featured. Leon Thomas’s very distinctive vocal style is impossible to miss when he contributes his talent. [This record was donated to the radio station with which I am affiliated by another non-commercial radio station that had ceased its support of music on the airwaves. It was found to duplicate an item we already had at “my” station, so I brought it home. So that makes this the rare item of which I have not been sole owner.] [See also my listing for ARCHIE SHEPP/JASPER VAN’T HOF: Mama Rose here on eBay.]
- About the seller: I am downsizing my personal belongings, and you can benefit. Unless otherwise indicated, all my records have been owned by me alone and treated with loving care. No significant scratches or gouges. I have been a Jazz radio broadcaster for 30+ years, but my musical tastes are wide-ranging. You will see this as my listed offerings grow. New items added weekly, check back often!
[NOTE: I clean all LPs with the Record Doctor device, but you will likely find my items rather dusty when they arrive. I have a lot of static electricity in my house, and dust always instantly returns to record surfaces after cleaning! Sorry about that!]
PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely.
FREE SHIPPING to U.S. address for purchase of any item of $100 or more.
