Description
BOBBY HUTCHERSON: Head On. Used vintage LP (very rare!) in Very Good+/Very Good condition; original edition, not a RE. Liberty/UA/Capitol/Blue Note Recs. LP Catalog # BST-84376; 1971
Condition: Vinyl has numerous small spots of something or other that Record Doctor was unable to remove, and a radial scratch on Side One, which suggests this record was gifted to me long, long ago. These flaws do not adversely affect the sound, which justifies my grading of the vinyl as VG+. Note the label (see pics), which is radically different from Blue Note releases in years to come. [see “About the Music” section below] Jacket is a little beat up, but entirely intact: there is a hint of a cut-out notch at lower left as seen from front, but that could simply be damage from previous owner. A little of the finish is worn off at same corner, and there’s mild shelf wear on bottom edge.
Behind the Music: This project is sort of a “concept” album, though this is not expounded upon by the meager notes on back of jacket. There are but two, long, selections per side. Side One starts with a suite titled “At the Source,” followed by “Many Thousands Gone.” The latter, as well as two other compositions, are credited to Todd Cochran, who plays piano as well. That said, it is also the name of a traditional lament from the days of slavery. Perhaps Mr. Cochran is simply claiming arranging credit, and indeed he is listed as having done all the arrangements. Side Two brings us Hutcherson’s “Mtume” and “Clockwork of the Spirits.” The ensemble of talents sounds almost like an orchestra at times, and includes Harold Land, Oscar Brashear, William Henderson on electric piano (with which he significantly contributed to some of the late Pharoah Sanders’s albums), two bassists but no drummer (unless one of the bassists listed is actually a drummer). The leader of course contributes his great skills on vibraphone and marimba. The album was recorded in Los Angeles, with the master remixed by Rudy Van Gelder back in the East. Blue Note, proudly founded as an independent label in 1939, was getting kicked around in the 1970s and forward. Thus Liberty Records, United Artists Records, Capitol Records and Blue Note are listed as issuing this record. Blue Note would later enjoy a renaissance, much to the benefit of us music lovers. My asking price is based on the following: As of date of my listing this album, there are only TWO copies from this early pressing listed for sale on Discogs, with many more users there wanting a copy than owning a copy.
