PHAROAH SANDERS: Oh Lord, let me do no wrong. Used vintage LP in Mint/Very Good condition. Doctor Jazz Recs. LP Catalog # FW40952; 1987
Condition: Record played all of twice, appears unplayed, pressed on superior vinyl, labels perfect. There are issues with the LP jacket, however. I did have a major roof leak years ago, and I think that explains the problem with lower right corner (as seen from front) and worse damage to lower left as seen from back. Some of the semi-gloss finish apparently dissolved in those areas and lower part of the jacket opening looks “nibbled on.” On the plus side, the colors remain vibrant and there are no corner crushes or ring impression.
Behind the Music: Doctor Jazz is one of several record companies in which legendary producer Bob Thiele had a hand. That gentleman helped make ABC Impulse! Records the standard bearer for Modern Jazz (“post-Bop”) in the 1960s, most famously thru his work with John Coltrane. Frankly, I don’t grasp why this Sanders album is less highly valued among collectors than his work for Theresa Records. Donald Smith and William Henderson play keys, Tarik Shah is bassist, Greg Banoy the drummer. Leon Thomas contributes his vocal power to three selections. The tunes: “Equinox” (Coltrane), “(Clear) Out of This World” and “Polka Dots and Moonbeams” (both standards), “If It Wasn’t For a Woman” (L. Thomas), the title tune, “Next Time You See Me” (composer not stated). In my musical judgment, this album stands favorably with the albums the late Pharoah Sanders had done for Theresa in the preceding few years and my asking price reflects this, while also taking into account the damage to the LP jacket.

[NOTE: I clean all LPs with the Record Doctor device, but you will likely find my items rather dusty when they arrive. I have a lot of static electricity in my house, and dust always instantly returns to record surfaces after cleaning! Sorry about that!]
PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely.
