SANTI DEBRIANO: Obeah. Used vintage LP in Mint/Mint condition. Free Lance Records (France) LP Catalog # FRL 008; 1987. RARE!!
Condition: Vinyl (French pressing) very superior to typical US product. Jacket is essentially free of even minor flaws.
Behind the Music: Who is Santi Debriano? I guess I have to put him in the category of Under-appreciated Jazz artist. Indeed, I only became aware of this fine project (from a digital master recording) because I was a Jazz radio broadcaster when it was released. This French label, Free Lance, may not have survived long, though the leader did go on to a successful career. The Music Business is a very tough one indeed, especially where Jazz is concerned. All the tunes on this album are Debriano originals except the title tune, attributed to the band collectively. And what a band it is! Debriano, bass; Kenny Barron, piano; Sonny Fortune, alto sax & flute; Jerry Gonzalez, trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion; Billy Hart, drums. Guitarist Paul Meyers is added for one selection. Buy this album and own something pretty rare and musically impressive! (No listing on a certain website that caters to vinyl collectors.)
