WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS: Dead City Radio. Used LP (ex-radio copy) in Very Good+/Good condition. Island Records Catalog # 422-846 264-1; 1990
Condition: Vinyl in good shape 35 years after I brought this duplicate copy home from the radio station where I’m still a volunteer. There is a small area of “crud” on Side A that I couldn’t remove, but it did not affect playback sound (no needle skip). Label on Side B has radio station call letters in magic marker. Jacket didn’t fare as well, with creases, shelf wear on bottom and spine, and radio call letters written on front and over the Producer’s notes on the project on back. But that text can still be read, as the marks are “translucent.” These marks don't show up well in my pics, but they are there.
Behind the Music: From the genius mind of the late Music Producer Hal Willner came this collaboration from 1990 with William S. Burroughs, combining spoken word with instrumental accompaniments that include Sonic Youth, Donald Fagen, John Cale, Lenny Pickett and allegedly The NBC Symphony Orchestra (!)—were they still even working in 1990?? Burroughs, notorious author, dope addict, gun freak, convicted murderer of his wife (I don’t know if he served any significant time), etc. possessed a voice you’d recognize instantly. He sounded in 1990 like what he was—a man who’d reached a surprisingly old age all things considered. The selections include readings from his own works (Naked Lunch, etc.) and recitation of some Biblical passages (notably The Sermon on the Mount), with interjected commentary on the material. I didn’t hear any “F-bombs” when I listened to this recently—for the first time, after possessing it for 35 years!—only a couple uses of “shit.” Maybe not quite “family-friendly,” but not all that coarse. My asking price reflects fact that I only see one copy offered on Discogs, for about $100 (which would have to ship from Australia!), with almost twice as many seeking it as owning it.

[NOTE: I clean all LPs with the Record Doctor device, but you will likely find my items rather dusty when they arrive. I have a lot of static electricity in my house, and dust always instantly returns to record surfaces after cleaning! Sorry about that!]
PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely.
