Description
A VERY RARE COPY OF THIS 1959 RELEASE FROM THE SHADOWS ON A SOUTH AFRICAN 78
THIS WAS THE FIRST RECORD RELEASED UNDER THE NAME OF THE SHADOWS - AND IT WAS A POP VOCAL!
" SATURDAY DANCE "
b/w " LONESOME FELLA "
The Shadows were formed from members of late 1950s UK skiffle groups: the Newcastle-based Railroaders (and also the Five Chesternuts on Columbia Records) who supplied Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch, both inspired by US pop music; and the Vipers Skiffle Group (on Parlophone Records) who supplied Jet Harris andTony Meehan from London, both inspired by UK jazz–skiffle music. The songs for this first single were written by the founder of the Chesternuts - Pete Chester (son of Comedian Charlie Chester) with the Saturday Dance song also being worked on by Hank Marvin). Pete Chester went on to write many more songs for Cliff and the Shadows - including Please Don't Tease which got to number 1
But this early Shadows record was not a big seller - and within a year They were recording an instrumental written by Jerry Lordan "Apache" that changed their direction totally and was to become one of the biggest selling british instrumentals of all time. Ironically it was this hit that knocked "Please Don't Tease" off the number one spot.
