Description
Up for auction is a copy of Van Dyke Parks’ debut 45, Number Nine, backed with Do What You Wanta, released circa 1965 on US MGM cat no K 13441. This is a stock copy: Van’s early 45s are rare on promos, but stock pressings are even scarcer.
This 45 precedes Van’s collaboration with Brian Wilson on the Beach Boys’ ill-fated Smile LP, and shares with Smile a sense of musical experimentation yet joie-de-vivre. The a-side is a magical re-interpretation of Beethoven’s “Ode To Joy” (from the 9th symphony - hence the title), of which Parks has reassigned himself as sole writer. The flip is –who’d have guessed?- a Northern Soul style stomping floor filler, on which future Three Dog Night hitmaker Danny Hutton has a co-credit. A curious, marvellous 45, and the first real evidence of the idiosyncratic career path which Parks was to follow from here on in.
Condition: vinyl has a few very minor surface marks (none “feelable”) on each side, labels have a little wear around the centre hole and a cut-out drill hole. All round VG+.
My grades: I use a 10-point scale: M-; EX; VG+; VG; VG-; G+; G; G-; F (fair); P (poor), following Record Collector’s grading guidelines, with an extra + or – here & there to separate the wheat from the chaff. I never use mint as a grade for used records. My feedback from buyers indicates I normally undergrade in listings.
