VAN DYKE PARKS “Song Cycle” 1968 WB Rock Pop Psych lp Rare MONO WLP!!

1968/USA/Warner Bros. W-1727….. here’s a clean original Promo Mono pressing of this rare lp. The cover is in strong VG+ to VG++ condition with corner dings/wear, there is light aging/staining/soiling on the outer edges of the back cover, light cresing top corners, otherwise solid and clean with no splits or delete. The vinyl is in glossy strong VG+ to VG++ condition with mainly some light inaudible storage stains/blemishes from the inner sleeve and a few light sleeve scuffs/scratches, plays clean with only occasional light noise/crackle and plays with nice Mono fidelity. The sound clip is recorded directly from the record being offered and has not been altered in any way. A very nice copy of this rare Mono Promo issue! The long-awaited release of the  Beach Boys' lost '60s masterpiece Smile has introduced a new generation of listeners to the remarkable work of Van Dyke Parks, while reminding longtime admirers of his singular genius. As Smile's principal lyricist, the multi-talented Parks exercised considerable influence over that project's audacious, expansive vision. He would continue to maintain that level of artistic ambition and creative inspiration in his subsequent solo works. Although Smile would go unreleased for more than four decades, it did play a crucial role in launching Van Dyke Parks' long-running, consistently adventurous solo career. With a deal from Warner Bros. Records that allowed him a degree of creative control that was unheard of for a commercially unproven new artist, the young  composer/arranger/producer/multi-instrumentalist-whose '60s resume also included recordings with the Byrds, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Tim Buckley, Judy Collins and Sonny and Cher-made a decidedly auspicious solo debut with his landmark 1968 release Song Cycle. A one-of-a-kind work that embraces nothing less than the entire history of American popular music, Song Cycle finds Parks creating deeply personal music by incorporating elements from a stunningly diverse array of styles including the pop genius of Phil Spector, Stephen Sondheim's Broadway vertigo and the orchestral flare of American composer Charles Ives, and infusing this eclectic mix with a freewheeling, iconoclastic attitude that meshes well with the psychedelic spirit of the time. In addition to such vivid Parks originals as "Palm Desert," "Widow's Walk," "The All Golden," and "By the People," Song Cycle features Parks' idiosyncratic readings of Randy Newman's "Vine Street" and Donovan's "Colours." Simultaneously looking backward and forward, Song Cycle-reportedly one of the most expensive albums ever made at the time of its release-was wholly unique in 1968, and its singular musical vision remains unmatched. 

GRADING

MINT: I consider New Unplayed or Sealed items only.

M- or Mint Minus, very clean with clean visual appearance and sound, there may be a couple of light inaudible hairline scuffs or such and will be mentioned in the listing, a Mint- record looks and plays very clean. Same for the cover. Very clean with no delete or other issues.

EXCELLENT: still very collectable for most, visually and sonicly clean. A handful of light inaudible scuffs, or hairlines. Cover will be clean with little wear, or delete. No splits.

VG++ still a very nice copy with minimal wear, the vinyl will retain it's original gloss and can have some minor scuffs/scratches that don't affect play very much. Cover will have slight shelf wear, and or delete, minor split.

VG+ the vinyl will still retain much original gloss with a bit more scuffs and/or scratches I may list a very rare or desirable item with a lower grade, I will try to list all defects.
