It's Too Late to Stop Now is a live album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, released in 1974 (see 1974 in music). Frequently named as one of the best live albums ever recorded, It's Too Late to Stop Now was recorded during what has often been said to be Morrison's greatest phase as a live performer.

John Collis calls this album, "one of the most impressive of all attempts to squeeze the stage excitement of a rock performer on to vinyl."

The performances on the live album were from tapes made at the beginning of the tour in Los Angeles and also in London and Santa Monica. The London Rainbow concert was the first BBC simulcast in 1974 being broadcast simultaneously on BBC 2 television and Radio 2 stereo so that viewers with strategically sited loudspeakers could enjoy "stereo TV".

Morrison said about touring during this time period:

I am getting more into performing. It's incredible. When I played Carnegie Hall in the fall something just happened. All of a sudden I felt like 'you're back into performing' and it just happened like that...A lot of times in the past I've done gigs and it was rough to get through them. But now the combination seems to be right and it's been clicking a lot.

During the ending of the over ten minute long dynamic performance of "Cyprus Avenue" an audience member shouts out, "Turn it on!" and Morrison good-naturedly replies, "It's turned on already." At the very end he finished the concert with a final heartfelt, "It's too late to stop now!" giving the album its title.

A mixture of songs that inspired his own musical development, together with some of his own compositions, allied to a backing band and orchestra (The Caledonia Soul Orchestra) and several performances (as noted in the album's liner notes) that were recorded in concerts at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, California, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and at The Rainbow in London results in what Myles Palmer of the Times reviewed as demolishing "all barriers between the soul, blues, jazz and rock genres".

Unlike most live rock albums, there was no studio overdubbing allowed by Morrison, which resulted in the exclusion of "Moondance" from the album due to one wrong guitar note. Morrison strictly adhered to his concept of authenticity in presenting the live performance but his musical perfectionism prevented him from including "Moondance". "It's common practice to go back and fix things, but not with Van," bass player David Hayes said, "I think that's what makes it one of the best ever."

Guitarist John Platania says "He had a funeral for a lot of his old songs on stage. With Caledonia, he really got off on performing. There was definitely joy getting onstage at that point. That was a wonderful time for everybody. It was really like a family. Ordinarily, with rock 'n' rollers, jazzers and classical musicians in the band, you'd think it was a three-headed serpent but everybody got along famously."

A version of Morrison's recently written song, "I Paid the Price" was performed at the televised London Rainbow concert but was not included on the album. Clinton Heylin remarked on this song:

Absent from It's Too Late to Stop Now are any songs indicating the death of a great romance. Indeed there is no evidence that he even cut a version of "I Paid the Price" — his most direct and personal song about the break-up with Janet. Though it contains its share of hard feelings couched in a wild accusatory tone — "your forced superiority, your azure delusions of grandeur/are [not] gonna cut you free...you're as cold as ice, you're not Miss Nice/and I paid the price" — such feelings fell on stony ground.

“Ain’t Nothin’ You Can Do” inizia a svuotare il cappello delle magie che via via regala il calore di “Warm Love”, i brividi di “Into the Mystic”,“These Dreams of You” e le note immortali di “Domino”. E poi ancora “Saint Dominic’s Preview” e una infinita “Listen To The Lion”, con tastiere e fiati che assecondano un artista che qui sfiora davvero al perfezione. Anche “Here Comes The Night” di Bert Berns è potente e coinvolgente: come in tutto il disco l’impressione è quella di un fiume in piena, “Gloria” ne è la prova, che corre impetuoso senza mai straripare, portando con se tutto ciò che incontra nei suoi argini.
La summa sta tutta in una frase pronunciata sul finire di una interminabile “Cyprus Avenue” da un orso di Belfast in stato di grazia anche nel concedersi al pubblico: “it’s too late to stop now”. Unico neo, se proprio vogliamo trovarne uno, è che le registrazioni di questi due preziosi cd, vinili all’epoca, si riferiscono a due concerti, Los Angeles e Londra. Ci vorranno altri 20 anni prima che arrivi un secondo live ufficiale, “A Night In San Francisco” del 1994. Ma quella è un’altra storia, un altro Van Morrison.

George Ivan Morrison (generally known as Van Morrison) (born 31 August 1945) is a Grammy Award-winning Northern Irish singer, songwriter, author, poet and multi-instrumentalist, who has been a professional musician since the late 1950s. He plays a variety of instruments, including the guitar, harmonica, keyboards, drums, and saxophone. Featuring his characteristic growl — a unique mix of folk, blues, Irish, scat, and Celtic influences — Morrison is widely considered one of the most unusual and influential vocalists in the history of rock and roll. Critic Greil Marcus has gone so far as to say that "no white man sings like Van Morrison."

Known as "Van the Man" by his fans, Morrison first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, penning their seminal 1964 hit "Gloria". A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career.

Morrison has pursued an idiosyncratic musical path. Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", "Into The Mystic","Domino" and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul".

Morrison's career, spanning some five decades, has influenced many popular musical artists. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2000, Morrison ranked #25 on American cable music channel VH1's list of its 100 greatest artists of rock and roll, and in 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Van Morrison 42nd on their list of The Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Paste Magazine ranked him 20th in their list of 100 Greatest Living Songwriters in 2006 and Q Magazine ranked him 22nd on their list of 100 Greatest Singers in April 2007.
