Rhino revisit the 1992 Ridley Scott film 1492: Conquest Of Paradise with an expanded OST by the indomitably bearded, verging on odyssean Greek film scorer Vangelis. The record culls the best bits of the original score alongside two bonus tracks, 'Line Open' and 'Landscape', which were formerly only available on the Conquest Of Paradise single. Gerard Depardieu, Armand Assante and Sigourney Weaver star in the film as companion triumvirs of the conquest by Christopher Columbus of the Americas; with gut-tugging, epic marches and swelling brass - somewhat far removed from Vangelis' usual heavy synth ladlings-on-thick - we hear hope and consequence mingle in impossible disunion, as we join in on a sour journey whose depiction onscreen was here lampooned for its historical inaccuracy. And yet the soundtrack by the great composer is as cool as ever, standing on its own.
