RECOMMENDED
Lay folk likely really recognise Vangelis as the guy who made the Blade Runner score and that landmark track from Chariots of Fire. Actually, the Greek visionary is up there with the greatest talents to ever work in jazz, ambient, synth, progressive and orchestral music, laying claim to 23 studio albums on top of all those soundtracks everyone knows him for.
Spiral was - is - his third LP, and resulted in the Midem International Instrumental Award for the track 'To The Unknown Man' when it arrived in 1978. The whole record is inspired by Taoist beliefs in the universe existing and moving in spirals, so combine that philosophy with keyboard arpeggiation, space saws, and similar and you'll be somewhere close to what this sounds like. Only with more eccentricity and gothicism.
