The eventual, released version of this, their first single, came out in August 1987, but what you (and no-one else apart from the band) never knew (it's remained undocumented after all), is that there was an earlier version recorded at Paradise Studios (at the same time as the 'B' side)...it got to test pressing stage, in very early 1987, but for reasons I cannot remember (I owned and ran the Phantom label back then), the 'A' side version was not deemed worthy enough by the band, for release...so they went into EMI's 301 Studios and re-recorded it, again with John Bee producing, and punched out the version that was eventually released several months later (way behind initial schedule). We were given 6 of these first test pressings only, and one each were given to Simon, Mark, and Cameron, of the band, and I retained 3...I sold the other two of them a few years ago - this is the final one....and I gotta admit I've been having reservations about selling it.
This'd be your only chance now to own one.
…now, to the music itself…both sides of this are UTTERLY AWESOME and melodic-as-all-HELL!…compared at the time, in very glowing terms, to Husker Du...plus “Changes”-era TSOL...and the Replacements…but the most obvious is “Candy Apple Grey”-era Husker Du…in fact the Chainsaws covered that album’s “Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely” live…never less than an awesome version too…but this is one of the truly GREAT Australian punk 45’s of the 80’s…no question. The version here of the 'A' side is definitely different, most noticeably so during the spoken word TS Eliot poem segment. (The 'B' side of both this and the released version are the same.)

The engravings in the run-off grooves of the 'A' side of the eventually released second recording, read:

And the engravings on this first one read:
DB SMX67737 .....CHAIN SAWS LANDING PH 23-A
All spaces and dots are precise.
Don Bartley was the cutting engineer of the first, and Leon Zervos did the second one (hence those initials). I pretty sure both were done at EMI's "Studios 301" cutting room.

LABELS: ( Side One: EX / Side Two: EX )...stains on each label are identical and were in fact on several more different test pressings - they were a flaw in the paper used...see pix...
