There are more than a few unanswered questions attached to this record. A guy I knew was a serious blues collector years ago before he died. He used to bring back to Australia stuff he found in the USA in the 50’s and 60’s and this is one such record. This is all harmonica blues with no label attached. It all seems to be from the 1920’s. The only available info on the artists appears to be what he’s written on the cover and inside fly. Maybe some /most/all are unreleased. I dunno. Maybe he recorded them himself/took them from master tapes/copied them from old records etc. Tho the last doesn’t seem likely because the sound of these is very clear without the characteristic 78 rpm sound. “Harmonica “ Earl Wilson on “Pot Licker Blues” and “Narrow Gauge Blues” with Chas Johnson on guitar . Recorded Bristol Tennessee 28 th July 1927 .

“El Watson’s Fox Chase , “Bay Rum Blues”, “Sweet Bunch of Daisies” recorded in New York on 7th May1928. “One Sock Blues “ has a harmonica solo. ‘El Watson’s Fox Chase” has unknown bones player plus Robert Cooksley on harmonica.(more to this)

Ellis Williams plays harmonica on “Smoky Blues” and adds a spoons man on “Buttermilk Blues”

‘Frenchy’s String Band is in fact trumpeter Polite Christian (list of band members follows).’Sunshine Special” is instrumental “Texas and Pacific Blues” is vocal but the person who sings is not stated. This seems Frenchy’s only waxing contribution. (etc)

There are no serious marks merely a mild amount of scuffing and occasional crackle but less than you would expect from a record with a pedigree like this. Nowhere does it skip or jump etc.There’s a tiny raised area- a blip- in the trail in vinyl on one side because it’s a hand made pressing.It doesn’t affect play. The label is hand typed.

Record: VG++           

MINT: Brand new condition, no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. Cover, label, extras in perfect condition.

EXCELLENT: Slight signs of having been played, no lessening of sound quality. Cover, label, extras are good.

VERY GOOD: played quite a few times, no real deterioration in sound quality. Cover, label, extras slight amount of wear and tear.

GOOD: showing some wear and tear. Reasonable, playable sound. No major defects in record, cover, label, extras.
