This is African-American roots music, through and through. The first of six volumes, Negro Folk Music of Alabama, Vol. 1: Secular Music brings together pumping harmonica solos, field calls, ring game songs, and a rendition of "Brer Rabbit and the Alligators." The 14 secular-based field recordings heard here were collected by Harold Courlander in western Alabama during the first few months of 1950. Listening is like stepping back in time. The liner notes include lyrics, background on each track, and an explanation of the connection between the African Earth bow, the Haitian Mosquito drum, and the African-American washtub bass. An invaluable collection, Negro Folk Music of Alabama, Vol. 1: Secular Music reminds listeners that the music they love -- jazz, rock, pop, blues -- owes so much to African-American folk music from the deep south. ~ John Vallier
