The wonderful Death Is Not The End takes a haunting journey through the early decades of fado, Portugal's famous folk music of quiet dignity and bittersweet reflection. Spanning recordings from the 1910s to the 1930s, the compilation showcases Lisbon and Coimbra styles performed by the genre's pioneering voices, long predating the rise of Amalia Rodrigues. Each track deals with the poised acceptance of life's hardships, which so defines fado, and offers plenty of lyrical and musical nuance akin to Greek rebetika or Deep South blues. The collection is both historically illuminating and emotionally stirring.
