Description

This V-Disc, Number 741, (12", 78 RPM) features Abbott and Costello performing their famous Baseball Routine "Who's On First?", on the A-side, and Gladys Goodding, organist at Ebbets Field and Madison Square Garden, performing a baseball medley on the B-side. It has its original off-white sleeve, which is in good condition.
The record has marks on both sides, but I have played it on my own Gramophone Victrola "Picnic" model, and it plays through without skipping. I would rate the condition of the record "good". I doubt that it would play well on a modern turntable because of the differences in arm weight and needle diameter.
V-Discs were records produced by the American military Special Services Division from 1943 to 1949 which featured popular bands, singers and spoken word artists performing their favorite songs or routines for the enjoyment of members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard during and immediately after World War II. They were 12" 78 RPM records, and were shipped all over the world, wherever American military troops were stationed. At the end of their run, many of the V-Discs were destroyed by the American government and American military, because the performers were under contract to commercial recording labels and had recorded the V-Discs outside of their primary contracts for the benefit of Wartime and Occupation troops.
The Baseball Medley Mrs. Goodding plays on the B-side includes: Take Me Out To The Ball Game, Sidewalks Of New York, Shine On Harvest Moon, Alice Blue Gown, Down By The Old Mill Stream, and Margie.
