Originally released in 1972, "Transa" remains one of Brazilian singer-songwriter Caetano Veloso's most alluring and potent recordings. As this reissue proves, the album has lost none of its allure. While rooted in samba and bossa nova, it drew a lot of influence from contemporaneous British and American rock, pop and folk music, with some of the songs - most notably "Nine Out Of Ten" - either being delivered in English or featuring references to London landmarks. It's an interesting cultural curiosity, but more importantly the songs, arrangements and softly spun production - think gentle acoustic guitars, infectious rhythms and warm bass - are all fantastic.
