Description
Up for auction is a pretty nice copy of the landmark Velvet Underground album "The Velvet Underground & Nico" with the famous Andy Warhol "banana peel" cover released on Verve Records (V6-5008) in 1967. This is an original, stereo deep groove copy with gatefold, banana peel cover. Pressed on super heavy, inflexible vinyl.
Cover is in pretty nice shape. Front is still nice and white, with no real signs of age discoloration, which is common for this white cover. Banana peel is mostly intact, except for the very top, which is missing. Looks like the bottom part of the banana was peeled back and replaced, but it's not missing any pieces there (see photo). Corners are sharp, not bumped, though a couple show some very minor rubbing. Seams are strong and intact, no splits or cracking, which is also common for this cover. Spine is good, except some of the lettering shows some minor rubbing loss and a very small separation. Back cover is generally clean, with a small amount of ring wear at top middle (see photo). Has "stereo" sticker in upper right corner. Inside of the gatefold is generally clean, though there are some small initials printed in upper right corner. Overall, this is a nice cover and presents well. Well-preserved all things considered. I'd grade this cover as VG+ (Very Good Plus).
The vinyl is also in still pretty nice shape, and retains much of its original gloss. There are, though, several hairlines and several minor scratches on both faces. Nothing deep that would cause skipping or loud pops. Definitely shows signs of having been played and handled. Labels and spindle holes look generally clean. I've play tested this record, and I'd say that it plays better than it looks visually. Does play with some surface noise through out, but it doesn't overwhelm the music, which still sounds strong. This record is not audiophile clean, but it does still play very well all things considered. Still an enjoyable record to listen to. I'd grade Side One as somewhere between VG and VG+ and Side Two as VG.
