·       ROBERT QUINE WAS THE LEGENDARY NEW YORK PUNK/GARAGE GUITAR PLAYER  WHO PLAYED WITH LOU REED ON THREE OF HIS ALBUMS (BLUE MASK; LEGENDARY HEARTS; AND LIVE IN ITALY); WITH RICHARD HELL AND  THE VOIDOIDS AND WAS FOR ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES THE INFORMAL SIXTH MEMBER OF THE VELVET UNDERGROUND AND THE THIRD LEAD GUITAR.

·       This seller knew Robert Quine firsthand. Quine wasn't the friendliest of all humans (I can see why Lou Reed and Robert Quine never quite got along - it was a permanent war of two very strong personalities, one alpha-dominant and the other beta-defensive), and at times he could be terribly insecure, abrasive and sarcastic, but he was definitely a person of some integrity, great intelligence, truly extraordinary talent and - in some strange, counterintuitive NYC way - a sweet, charming person with an unusual sense of humor -- as long as he got to know you real well and get close to you, which - to my  great regret - we never were. He was also one of top-10 greatest guitar players in the history of modern American music, right up there with Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ry Cooder, Adrian Belew, Albert King, BB King, Freddie King and Elmore James (whom he worshipped like God and whose every recording in any available format extant he owned and worshipped like a golden calf). This auction is lovingly dedicated to the memory of Michael Carlucci (1957-2015),  the owner and proprietor of the (now long gone) Subterranean Records in the West Village neighborhood of New York City, a doyen of the New York's Punk scene, a good mutual friend of Quine's and this seller's and a legal heir of the Quine estate, without whose strong support, encouragement and endless prodding (and subsequent ownership of these tapes), Robert Quine never would have released any of this wonderful music (much of Quine's recordings remain unpublished and may never see  the light of day).  Special appreciation for Bill Levinson of Universal Music for making this package possible on every legal, technical and musical level possible.

Bootleg Series, Vol. 1: The Quine Tapes is a six-LP compilation of live performances from the Velvet Underground. This is likewise the first in presumably a series of recordings documenting the band's concert visage throughout their brief history. This volume is derived from the semi-legit and non-professional recordings of Robert Quine (guitar), who at the time was a fan as well as a friend of the band. During the intervening years, Quine became a founding member of Richard Hell & the Voidoids and later went on to work with guitarist Lou Reed on his 1982 solo album, Blue Mask. A majority of these recordings are from the VU's swing through the San Francisco Bay Area circa late November/early December 1969. Additionally, they reflect the period just prior to embarking upon the Loaded album. This latter-era band includes: Lou Reed (guitar/vocals), Sterling Morrison (guitar/vocals), Doug Yule (bass/organ/vocals), and Maureen "Mo" Tucker (percussion/vocals). Tucker's contributions are of particular note, as this collection features both "After Hours" as well as "I'm Sticking With You," her only VU-related lead vocals. The track list likewise offers a decent sampling from the group's back catalog, including a few tunes that had yet to be issued at the time these recordings were made. Among them are "Ride into the Sun" and "I Can't Stand It" -- which would initially surface on Lou Reed's self-titled debut -- as well as a few tunes that were never issued on a studio album by the band, such as "Over You," and "It's Just Too Much." These titles are likewise available on 1969: Velvet Underground Live. Potential consumers should note that the no-fi sound quality of this release is at the very worst only a minor distraction. For the most part these recordings are clean. Although they are in mono, they are as enjoyable -- if not more so -- than similarly issued releases, such as the previously mentioned 1969: Velvet Underground Live or Live at Max's Kansas City, both of which were unprofessionally documented.
