"White Light / White Heat" Verve Records RARE 1968 Yellow Label Promo MONO LP! No Reserve!
The Velvet Underground - "White Light/White Heat" Verve Records V-5046 from 1968. Super Hard To Find Original Verve MONO Promotional Disc Jockey pressing of the classic second Proto-Punk album from The VU - Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen (Mo, Moe) Tucker. It is my understanding that this much punchier MONO version has never been released commercially, only as a Promo. It is also my understanding that the famous "Skull Tattoo" front cover is a bit different on the MONO versions with the Skull being moved up higher on the cover because the Title, Artist, and Verve logo are also placed higher than the Stereo versions. Try as I might, I never could get a very decent picture or scan of the cover, sorry, this was the best I could get! As you probably know if you are looking, there are many different versions of this LP. Here are what seem to be the important details:

  • Matrix Numbers: Side 1 - V 5046 SIDe1 MG1258; Side 2 - V 5046 SIDe2 MG1259
  • Front cover with "Skull"
  • "V-5046" on bottom left
  • Back cover reads "There She Comes Now"
  • Back cover Lou Reed "Lead Guitar" credit
  • Back cover credits Andy Warhol for "Cover Concept"
  • Spine reads from left to right, with front of cover facing upwards: "WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT THE VELVET UNDERGROUND VERVE V-5046"
  • Yellow / Black "T" Verve label, Reads (on two lines) "Disc Jockey Record" / "NOT FOR SALE"
  • Label Song credits: "Reed - Morrison - Cale - Tucker" (no initials)
  • Label reads "Three Prong Music / All Selections BMI" (on two lines)
  • Label reads "MGM RECORDS - A DIVISION OF METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER, INC. - Made in U.S.A."


In super nice condition! I bought this album online from a reputable seller who graded it as M-/M-. That gives you an idea of just how nice it is, but... The cover shows some basic ring and edge wear and the corners are not as tight as they could be so, while I still think it's really nice, I would grade it as VG+ rather than Near Mint! Please note - any marks, streaks or blotches that you may see which are not mentioned in the write up (like those in the upper right corner of the cover) are scanner artifacts, not defects in the record cover... I will list any actual defects! The Vinyl itself is also super. I would say that it really has probably only been played once judging by the single light spindle trail on each side and the fact that the spindle hole appears basically untouched. There are, however, some light sleeve scuffs if you look closely that would make me grade it at VG++ rather than Near Mint. In any case, super nice! As mentioned, the labels have a couple light spindle trails but are otherwise Near Mint too.

Records are graded to the best of my ability to Goldmine Visual standards. If you are not familiar with this grading system (or even if you think you are!), please check it out before bidding I have summarized the important (i.e. I think everyone knows what Mint means) points below in Goldmine's words:

Very Good Plus (VG+): Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK.

Very Good (VG): Surface noise will be evident upon playing,... Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.

I stand by my grades but would like us to be on the same page so no problems arise. I have been selling Vintage Vinyl for over eleven years on the net and I can count the returns I've had on one hand so I believe my grading is fair and accurate. One important note, I try to grade to these Goldmine guides as best as I can understand and apply them. This gives us both a written standard to go by rather than having to guess. But.... it also means that I don't issue refunds over differences of opinion in grading i.e. "That's not MY idea of a VG record!" - I don't know what your standards are and, as such, can't grade to them. I guarantee that items I sell will meet my description, nothing more or less! If you are not satisfied that a purchase meets my description, I will do what I can to make it right if you give me the chance and work with me! Please feel free to check my feedback.
