Description
MGM/ Verve, blue label stereo, 1968, with "skull" cover design in flat black on semi-glossy black front; rare mis-press with mono version on side 1, stereo version on side 2.
Labels say stereo, most songs credited as published by Oakfield Avenue Music, unlike most originals that say published by Three Prong Music.
Hand etched run out V-5006 MG1258 matrix side 1, V6-5006 MGS1259 matrix side 2.
Cover labeled as stereo with stereo matrix # on front, also has small mono # upside down at lower corner on back.
The only copy of this version listed on Discogs is offered for $150.
VG- to VG/ VG+
Original "skull" cover has moderate ring wear, spot wear on front, a few spots of edge wear, 3" split at center spine, some light stains on front/ back, small creases. Lp has some scuffs, plays well with little surface noise.
The VU's legendary, iconic sophomore album, here in a very early and still formative "misprint" stage - although cover and label are labeled as stereo, and side 2 is the normal stereo version, side 1 has the mono version pressed into its grooves, with the matrix # of V-5006 rather than the usual V6-5006, apparently due to a factory mix up early in the game.
The mono mix of course features John Cale's monologue on "The Gift" mixed into both channels, rather than panned hard to one speaker as on the strictly-panned stereo copy. Also, at 135g, this copy is around 10 grams heavier than most copies of that era. Exceptionally rare!
Again, the only copy of this version currently listed on Discogs is offered for $150. Here's a decent copy, that plays well, offered for a fifth of that price.
