Description
THE VERSATILE'S RARE RELEASE "CYCLOTHYMIA" BACKED BY THE "FARMER'S DAUGHTER" ON 1967 RICKARBY RECORDS 45 RPM #106.ALSO INCLUDED ARE TWO 8X10 PHOTOS OF THE VERSATILES ON STAGE.THIS RECORD HAS SOME WEAR AND THERE ARE A FEW MINOR SURFACE SOUNDS BUT PLAYBACK IS GENERALLY VG OR BETTER.LABELS ARE WORN. SEE PHOTOS BELOW.
Here is a little history on the Versatiles. They were recorded on the Rickarby Label which was named after the street in Mobile where the owner of the label , Ray Smith lived and had a small studio.Ray Smith had been a member of the Rhythm Aces of Mobile in 1959, a four piece group that had a country sound with harmonies by Ray Smith and Lamar Smith(brothers)that sounded like the Everly Brothers. At or about that time Ray and Lamar released a few records on the Capa label including a rare release on Capa#103.(Make Up Your Own Mind Suzie/and Won't Do)It played locally in the Mobile Market but never got any further.
Subsequently Ray recorded and produced a group called the Perfections. This was about 1962. The personel included Frank Enos,Daryl Huffman Lead Guitar player(later of the Versatiles) Lamar "PJ" Johnson,Drummer,(also later of the Versatiles)and Freddie Beachs, and then there was a second version of the Perfections that incluede Ray Smith on Vocals.
This information is from my speaking directly to Ray Smith, who says that he does not exactly remember the dates but that around 1966 he managed, produced and recorded the Versatiles.
The lineup of the Versatiles included Jerry Smith on Guitar and Vocals,Daryl Huffman on Lead Guitar,David Smith(Jerry's Brother) on Bass and Vocals, and Lamar "PJ" Johnson on Drums & Backup Vocals. In the time frame they performed together they did gigs in Mobile, Pensacola and surrounding area.
In either 1966 or 1967 the Versatiles recorded the now hard to find Psychadelic "Cyclothymia" on the Rickarby label #106. The Flip side was Farmer's Daughter a heavily harmonized (Beach Boy Style)good sounding Teen Pop song.
I am auctioning a copy of "Cyclothymia" with this auction, along with two photos of the Versatiles. These photos were copied for this purpose from originals belonging to Ray Smith and enhanced to correct for damage from aging. Please look at my other auctions as I will be offering a copy of Capa 103 "Make up your own mind Suzie." which was released only in the local area in small quantities and now is also very rare.with that record I will be also offering two prints of the two different perfections and the Rhythm Aces which were also copied with permision fom Ray Smith,
Later I will be auctioning off the only copy in existance of two songs Performed by Ray and Lamar with the Rhythm Aces in 1959 and it is on a 78 rpm acetate which is in Ok condition but does have some surface noise. the two songs are "Bonnie Blue Eyes"/ and " Prove our Love"
All these items are the property of Ray Smith, and I am auctioning them on consignment for him.If you want information about any of these items please call me at (251-621-5271) I am Arnie Ballonoff. If you don't reach me leave a message or send an email to me at arnysandra@aol.com
