Background -

Black Sabbath are an English rock band, formed in Birmingham in 1968, by guitarist and main songwriter Tony Iommi, bassist and main lyricist Geezer Butler, singer Ozzy Osbourne, and drummer Bill Ward. The band have since experienced multiple line-up changes, with guitarist Iommi being the only constant presence in the band through the years. Originally formed in 1968 as a blues rock band, the group soon adopted the Black Sabbath moniker and began incorporating occult themes with horror-inspired lyrics and tuned-down guitars. Despite an association with these two themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and apocalyptic prophecies of the horrors of war.

Osbourne's regular abuse of drugs and alcohol led to his dismissal from the band in 1979. He was replaced by former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio. Following two albums with Dio, Black Sabbath endured countless personnel changes in the 1980s and 1990s that included vocalists Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen and Tony Martin, as well as several drummers and bassists. In 1992, Iommi and Butler rejoined Dio and drummer Vinny Appice to record Dehumanizer. The original line-up reunited with Osbourne in 1997 and released a live album Reunion. Black Sabbath's 19th studio album, 13, which features all of the original members but Ward, was released in June 2013.

Black Sabbath are often cited as pioneers of heavy metal music. The band helped define the genre with releases such as Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970) and Master of Reality (1971). They were ranked by MTV as the "Greatest Metal Band" of all time, and placed second in VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them number 85 in their "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". They have sold over 70 million records worldwide. Black Sabbath were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. They have also won two Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance.

Master of Reality is the third studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath. Released in July 1971, it is widely regarded as the foundation of doom, stoner and sludge metal. It was certified double platinum after having sold over 2 million copies. Master of Reality was Black Sabbath's first and only top 10 album in the US until 13 forty-two years later.

Master of Reality peaked at number five on the UK Albums Chart, and at number eight in the United States, where it achieved Gold status on advance orders alone. It eventually sold two million copies in the US. Despite the album's immediate commercial success, it was viewed with disdain by several contemporary music critics. In his review for The Village Voice, Robert Christgau called the album "a dim-witted, amoral exploitation". Rolling Stone magazine's Lester Bangs described its music as "monotonous" and hardly an improvement over Paranoid, although he found the lyrics more revealing because they offer "some answers to the dark cul-de-sacs of Paranoid".

In 1994, Master of Reality was ranked number 28 in Colin Larkin's Top 50 Heavy Metal Albums. Larkin described it as Black Sabbath's "first real international breakthrough" and "a remarkable piece of work". Writing in MusicHound Rock: The Essential Album Guide (1999), authors Gary Graff and Daniel Durcholz described the album as a "brilliant skull crusher", singling out "Children of the Grave" and "Sweet Leaf" as "timeless" tracks. In 2001, Q included the album in their list of the 50 Heaviest Albums of All Time, calling it "malevolent ... casting Black Sabbath as a Titanic-style house band on the eve of Armageddon, cranking it as the bomb drops." A critic for the magazine cited it as "the most cohesive record of [the band's] first three albums." In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album number 298 in their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. They described the album as representing "the greatest sludge-metal band of them all in its prime". Billy Corgan, the leader of The Smashing Pumpkins, considered Master of Reality the album that "spawned grunge." Black Sabbath and especially Master Of Reality was a huge influence of the 90s Stoner Rock/Desert Rock scenes in the UK and the US, bands like Kyuss, Monster Magnet, Sleep and Orange Goblin have cited Sabbath and Master Of Reality as a defining album of that genre. John Stanier, drummer for Helmet and Tomahawk, cited the record as the one that inspired him to become a musician. In 2013, Sabbath biographer Mick Wall praised Iommi's "ability to incorporate more neat riffs and sudden unexpected time-changes in one song than most bands would contemplate on an entire album.".

    CONDITION Details:

    The LP jacket is in near mint minus condition! The jacket is tight and clean, with NO seam splits. The corners are solid, with just a bit of shelf wear the seams and corners. There is a small sticker on the back of the jacket. The front of the jacket has the raised letters (textured). The colors on the jacket are sharp...just lovely (see pictures with this listing as they are of the actual item). Title does not come with a poster insert.

    The LP is in excellent plus condition! We found that the vinyl looked great on this vintage LP. There are a couple of light marks (spider marks primarily) which are caused by sliding the LP in and out of the inner sleeve. Some of these marks may sound on some audio systems, depending on the sensitivity of your audio gear. However, these are NOT significant marks and the LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen - obviously well taken care of! There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels either. Just beautiful GERMAN or DUTCH / HOLLAND / NETHERLANDS made vinyl! We are not sure if the LP was made in Germany or Holland, please refer to the labels for this information as the pictures are of the ACTUAL ITEM.
