I've never seen a record like this!!! This was found along with 6 others similar to it, in my dad's belongings who was a popular gospel singer as I grew up in Nashville in the fifties. I consulted with one of the Jordanaires' sons, who is also affiliated with the Country Music Hall of Fame, authenticating memorabilia there for various artists. He said this piece was an acetate over metal recording that was recorded from the final cut recording, at the time the original recording was made. It is a nitrocellulose laquer coated blank disc which captures the sound. It is double sided, but each side looks different from the other according to the grooves, etc. It was used as a test pressing at the time of the session. This record has a couple of small chips at the outside edge and a scratch about 3/4" long but still plays fine...a very rare record indeed!!
Written by Otis Blackwell, Presley recorded this song on July 2, 1956 during an exhaustive recording session at RCA studios in New York City. During this session he also recorded "Hound Dog", which ultimately became the flip side to the release on July 13, 1956. The song features Presley's regular band of Scotty Moore on lead guitar (with Presley usually providing rhythm guitar), Bill Black on bass, D.J. Fontana on drums, and backing vocals from the Jordanaires. Presley insisted on 28 takes before he was satisfied with it. He also ran through 31 takes of "Hound Dog". It remained #1 for 11 weeks on all 3 main charts; Pop, Country, and R 'n' B, !! By the end of 1956 it had sold in excess of four million copies.
Presley performed "Don't Be Cruel" during all three of his appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show in September 1956 and January 1957.[1]
