VERY RARE LIBERACY RECORDING & PHOTO: Early 1950's signed promo & drawing in EX

Darbyncoates is pleased to offer two distinctive and unique items from the legendary Jazzman and Showman, the great Liberace: a rare record on the Columbia label (#1 below), AND a vintage 8 X 10" autographed photo (#2 below).


# 1 :

A "Promo" 10 inch vinyl record on the Columbia White Label 40217, featuring :

1) On the "12th Street Rag" side, the autograph of Liberace, along with his iconic hand drawn piano, on the label itself.

2) On the "Beer Barrel Polka" side, affixed to the upper half of the label is the official "letterhead" information for the Hollywood Artist Management firm that was representing Liberace during that Era, Gabbe-Lutz & Heller.

Gabbe-Lutz & Heller was a management firm in Hollywood that Liberace had engaged during the 1950's. Ebay will not allow us to place web page addresses into listings- however if you put Seymour Heller into the Wikipedia search engine you can read about some of what is known about Liberace and the firm.

The distribution of the hand-signed record was likely part of promotional activity that artists like Liberace preferred their agents to organize / administer.

3) The record / release itself is quite a rarity. Columbia had produced #40217 in a 10" 78 RPM Shellac version during the 1940's, to coincide with his appearance in a "Soundie." Wikipedia notes :

"In 1943, he (Liberace) began to appear in Soundies (the 1940s precursor to music videos). He re-created two flashy numbers from his nightclub act, "Tiger Rag" and "Twelfth Street Rag". In these films he was billed as Walter Liberace. Both "Soundies" were later released to the home-movie market by Castle Films."

As musical recordings were transitioning from shellac into the less fragile vinyl composition, the 10" size was often retained, but (more commonly) in the emerging 33 1/3 RPM format. Somewhat later (the mid 1950's), Columbia released #40217 in the 45 RPM format, and this was in the familiar 7" size.

Our offered VINYL release of #40217 is in the 10" size AND 78 RPM. This was likely released in between the Shellac and 7" 45 releases. That it is a white label promo with the the autographed drawing of "The King of Bling", means there are very few, if any, copies that remain.


THE VINYL : We grade the record at EX. There are some light marks on the surface, and it retains all of its original gloss with light use, as there is minimal evidence of spindlewear. The signature and hand-drawn piano are bright, clear and undamaged (please examine the photos).

An 8 X 10" signed, black & white photograph of Liberace.

Both of these items are likely from the mid 1950's, given the official release date of the Columbia LP.




This is a great opportunity to acquire two uncommon Objets D' art from both the musical and drawing talents of Liberace.
