Description: Up for your consideration is the next in a series of unique Lps, this one featuring 13 discs by Walter Lanier "Red" Barber. The labels note these were prepared by Knox Reeves Advertising, Inc. 400 Second Avenue South, Minneapolis, 1, Minn.
Briefly, in nearly 20 years of selling records, I've never seen these items. I've examined each record, and, overall, they are in EXCELLENT condition. They are 12" 33 1/3 rpm records in white inner sleeves. There are no covers and I'm not sure if there ever were. I will be updating this listing frequently with detailed track listings, so stay tuned. Frankly, I felt a bit like Indiana Jones when I discovered these, and the phrase, "it belongs in a museum" came to mind. Maybe someone from the Reds, Dodgers or Yankees MLB teams will want these? At this point, I'm not sure when to date this series of records, but I do intend to listen to a few and maybe a date will become apparent.
05:09: I took the time to listen to side 1 of the 1st record. It appears this is set up for a radio station as there is an introductory theme and introduction to each segment. The sound then pauses (presumably for a radio commercial). I then had to lift and move the needle to the next segment where the program started. This procedure was repeated for the next two segments. Side 1 played very well, so I'd expect the same for the remaining records. A reference was made to the year 1954, so, at this point, I know these were produced later than that year.
According to Wikipedia: Walter Lanier "Red" Barber was an American sports commentator. Barber, nicknamed "The Ol' Redhead", was primarily identified with radio broadcasts of Major League Baseball, calling play-by-play across four decades with the Cincinnati Reds (1934–1938), Brooklyn Dodgers (1939–1953), and New York Yankees (1954–1966) ... He dropped out of school to focus on his radio work. After four more years at WRUF he landed a job broadcasting the Cincinnati Reds on WLW and WSAI when Powel Crosley, Jr., purchased the team in 1934. On Opening Day 1934 (April 17), Barber attended his first major league game and broadcast its play-by-play, as the Reds lost to the Chicago Cubs 6–0. He called games from the stands of Cincinnati's renamed Crosley Field for the next five seasons. ... In 1939 Barber broadcast the first major-league game on television, on experimental NBC station W2XBS.
A few unique things about this item:
Firstly, these records retain the original shine with no visible imperfections other than some very light marks on the Chicago Bears disc grading by sight in normal room light. I'm sure if you took these and put them under a 1000 watt bulb, you'd probably find something that makes them less than mint. If you're that kind of collector, let me suggest this auction is not for you.
I don't claim these records are mint. Based on past experience and visual examination, I'd expect the tracks to average around half way beetween VG+ (excellent) and Near Mint with some scattered very light to light surface noise such that might be heard on just about any record. If you want an audio grade of an entire record, no problem, just drop me a note well in advance of the end of auction. You can then assign your own grade based on my comments on what I heard and the GRADING SCALE BELOW!.
Keep in mind how it plays for me may differ than how it plays for you based on differences in audio equipment.
Secondly, at the time of this listing, no past/present sales found on E-bay ! NO COPIES FOUND FOR SALE OUT ON THE INTERNET !!

I am using the Goldmine scale of G=Good(1), VG = Very Good(2), VG+ = Very Good Plus(excellent)(3), NM = Near Mint(4) when grading the disc(s).
Here is a summary of the record(s):
Additional criteria I use when audibly grading records for people:
- NM(4) = absolutely nothing wrong at all (very rarely happens--I've even opened sealed records and they don't play Near Mint)
- 3.5-3.9 = very, very light surface noise
- 3.1-3.4 = very light surface noise, very light pops
- VG+(3) = up to light pops and light surface noise (below this, one's enjoyment is affected, very subjective)
- VG(2) = up to medium pops and moderate surface noise
- G(1) = up to heavy pops and heavy surface noise
I can ship in a 14 x 14 x 6" box. Weight with box is about 6 pound 1 oz. Shipping is $5.87 Media Rate (6-7 pounds) + $1.70 box/tape/packing + $.50 handling = $8.07.
Buyer pays shipping/handling. Standard method within U.S. is Media Rate, $4.00 This includes online tracking. Outside U.S., e-mail location to determine S/H costs prior to auction end.
