VERY RARE SEEBURG ENCORE LIBRARY
24 RECORDS - No. 1-8, 10-25 (missing #9)
Records are in wax sleeves and plastic wrap/includes cardboard divider
The records are in excellent shape (about four have a scratch).
The records need some cleaning.
The Seeburg Encore Library Supplement was introduced in April 1963 for use in cocktail lounges and restaurants. Although the Encore records were still essentially Easy Listening instrumentals, they were considerably jazzier than Seeburg's other background music series and the tracks featured impressive instrumental solos. The Encore records featured extended frequency response and a wider groove cut. They sound every bit as good as standard mono LP records of the period; in fact it is safe to say that these are the best sounding 16 rpm records ever made. A new version of the Seeburg 1000 was unveiled at the same time. It was called the Encore Phonograph and unlike the previous versions of the 1000, it was housed in a handsome Danish Modern cabinet and intended to be in public view. The Encore Phonograph and records were sold to customers outright rather than leased. At $695, the machine was hard to sell because few customers were willing to plunk down that kind of change in 1963 for a phonograph for proprietary records (the records can only play on this phonograph). After a few years, Seeburg pulled the plug on the Encore series. Consequently, these records are scarcer than your standard issue Basic, Mood, or Industrial records.
This is from the Billboard magazine, May 11, 1963 regarding the Seeburg Encore Library:
"It's new "Encore Foreground Music" system is designed for listening - not blending into the background...Encore foreground programming is entirely different from that background system. It consists of specially scored instrumentals (no vocals) with a high-fidelity LP sound, and definitive vitality and rhythmic animation to give the music character and identity". Seeburg claims it was created for people who "like to listen".
These records have a large 2" center hole and are approximately 9" in diameter.
I found these records in a thrift store where they had already marked the box. Also, there is some punch hole damage to the box but it does not appear to affect the records.
