1997 Thousands turned out yesterday for a tearful final tribute to Downtown Radio presenter and country singer John Greer who died suddenly on Thursday night.

The funeral in Moira was one of the largest ever seen in the Co Down village - Portadown man John had lived there with his family for more than 20 years.

Mourners, among them the biggest names in Irish country music, travelled from all over Ireland to pay their last respects to the radio presenter and entertainer who had become a household name with his weekly Downtown Radio shows.

The 52-year-old singer collapsed and died half way through a concert he was appearing in at Portstewart Town Hall. On stage with him was his 15-year-old youngest daughter Claire Rebecca and they had just finished singing a duet of John's Dust on the Bible recording. …
