INFO FOR U (i.e. in case you even care)
In the early 1990's, there was an article that appeared in a San Diego magazine
titled "Surf Music...the Creation of the White and Privileged" (may not be exact but
very close). Essentially, the article detailed that surf music was popularized in the
early sixties by well -to-do white kids who had connections through their parents
with important record producers. Black and Hispanic rock groups were basically aced
out during this time. Oh sure, The Isley Brothers released a song titled "Twist and Surf" while
Chubby Checker released some surf songs but it was all to no avail and actually most
considered those songs a bit of a lark. During this time, REAL surf groups such as
The Tornados fron San Bernardino in California, had some great success.
Anyway, on the Vettes album, supposedly Steve Douglas wrote most of the songs
with help on "Cheater Slickin' Time" and "Shutdown King" by Gary Usher.
Usher contractually could not write songs for BEN-VEN Productions. So the second
credit was given to Nick Venet who was then supposed to filter that money back to
Gary. That never happened and Nick Venet was soon on the outs with many of the
surf infiltrators such as Jon Joyce, Hal Blaine and Joe Chemay.
