PLEASE NOTE: I WILL ONLY GRADE AN OPENED LP NEAR MINT (NM) IF I CAN GUARANTEE IT HAS NEVER BEEN PLAYED (i.e. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER). OTHERWISE, NEAR MINT MINUS (NM-) IS THE ABSOLUTE HIGHEST GRADE I WILL ASSIGN AN OPENED LP.
It's the evening of October 9th, 1980 and both the main pizza ovens have stopped working at legendary pizza joint Gino's East in downtown Chicago. There's one oven working but it's half the size of the main ovens. A call comes in for 2 pizzas and the caller is informed of the oven situation and that it will be a two and a half hour wait. The caller hesitates a moment and then identifies himself as Bruce Springsteen's manager. He tells the person manning the phone that the The Boss is in town and won't eat anything but Gino's when he's in the Windy City and asks if there's anything he can do. The caller is asked to hang on for a minute and put on hold. The employee calls the manager and tells him the restaurant owner's cousin wants to order a couple pizzas. "OK, forty minutes" is the response. The caller is told his pizzas will be ready in forty minutes if he can come pick them up. "No problem" is the caller's response. Forty minutes later a grateful manager of a certain Boss arrives with a signed copy of a rare white label promotional copy of the Boss's new LP The River "because that's all I have on hand". The LP is inscribed by the Boss "To Gino's Thanks For The Pizza". The Boss's manager also hands said employee a backstage pass for the Boss's show the next night at the gorgeous Uptown Theater (R.I.P.) on the city's far northeast side. Fast forward twenty years and the gentleman who has owned said LP is getting rid of his vinyl and tells me the story of how he came to obtain this incredible artifact. I buy his collection, treasure this LP for 19 whole years and finally decide to part with it after a lengthy argument inside my head. Finding a signed white label promo is near impossible. Finding one with a genuine dated backstage pass and that kind of provenance at this price? As any Jersey resident would say, Fuhgeddabouddit. LPs are a beautiful VG++ and cover is a nice VG+ with a hint of wear on the spine. Cover has a FOR PROMOTION ONLY and CBS ownership gold stamp with "Sale Is Unlawful" printed underneath in the top left hand corner on the rear cover. Includes original rigid printed inner sleeves and fold-out insert sheet with band pics and complete lyrics!!! Don't sleep Boss collectors. This is a one-of-a-kind item and will only rise in value, particularly when the Springsteen-based film "Blinded By The Light" is released in August and The Boss's profile is raised to dizzying heights. Springsteen is what the LP collecting world calls a blue chip artist (i.e. an unfuckwithable icon always worth the investment). Bohemian Rhapsody made Queen's catalog skyrocket in value. Nuff said. Wait and be sorry.
