Description
The RL SS version of Led Zeppelin II is one of the most famous and sought-after vinyl pressings in rock collecting.
It refers to an early 1969 U.S. pressing mastered by legendary engineer Robert Ludwig at Sterling Sound. In the runout groove (the "dead wax" near the label), you'll find the handwritten initials "RL" and usually "SS" on one or both sides. "RL" stands for Robert Ludwig, while "SS" stands for Sterling Sound.
Collectors call it the "Hot Mix" or "Hot Master" because Ludwig cut the lacquer with unusually high volume, deep bass, and enormous dynamic range. The result is an explosive, highly energetic sound with exceptional punch and clarity. Fans often describe it as feeling like the band is playing in the room, with especially powerful drums from John Bonham and a very aggressive presentation overall.
