VIC SIMMS
– THE LONER ‘Prison is a lonely place but it's also a place where Aboriginal men have found some sanctuary in having the time for reflection and creativity. Vic was a sometime cellmate with Bobby Merritt who wrote the first Aboriginal play The Cakeman in jail, likewise, Wiradjuri man, Kevin Gilbert also wrote a play in jail, The Cherrypickers. In Bathurst prison, Vic bought a guitar from a fellow inmate for a couple of packets of tobacco and started to write his own songs. He wrote about the things he saw around him, mostly the injustices to Aboriginal people.

Stranger in my country, Stranger in my land, Today we're somewhere no-account, tomorrow's something grand I doubt if you'd agree with me, or if you'd understand Till that day for guys like me I'm a stranger in my land (from the Loner, RCA, 1973)
His most impressive achievement is recording his first album and some say his best work, The Loner, in jail. Comparisons of Vic's 1973 lp to Johnny Cash's 1972 lp Live at San Quentin are obvious. The record company, RCA liked the tape of Vic's music that found its way to them. They knew he was doing the circuit of prisons singing for fellow inmates like Cash and at that time, the Correctional Services department needed good publicity. So RCA sent a mobile studio to Bathurst prison and The Loner was recorded live in one take in an hour and twenty minutes with inmates as audience. Vic literally sang his way out of jail… he was often released for publicity appearances to sing at shopping malls and even at the Opera House. Copies of The Loner are now so rare that Vic doesn't even own one. –
