VIEIRA DA SILVA WITH JOSÉ CID

“A Sudoeste / O Tempo É de Guerra”

Single 7”

Decca / Valentim de Carvalho SPN 201 G

1977

Portugal

Record: Excellent +

Cover: Very Good

This is the ultra-rare second and last single recorded by José Cid with Portuguese protest singer Vieira da Silva. He started his career some years before the April 74 revolution in Portugal, but to the prog rock fan the two records to look for are this and the first one, “Os Lobos: Eles Estão Aí / O Povo Há-de Vencer”, also with Cid.

The A-Side, “A Sudoeste” [Southwest] features some distinctive drum sound and beautiful choirs, somewhat reminiscent of South-American artists like Inti-Illimani or Quilapayun. On the B-side you’ll find a true gem called “O Tempo É de Guerra” [It’s Time for War], on which José Cid uses extensively his moog synthesizer, so that the harmony completely depends on it. The sound is kind of Mediterraean prog rock, bringing to mind the contemplative shores of Italy and Greece.

At the time of recording this single, José Cid had already left Portuguese psychedelic / progressive group Quarteto 1111. The guest musicians here are top artists like Guilherme Inês (ex-member of Chinchilas, Objectivo and Quarteto 1111), Zé Nabo (a crucial figure in Portuguese pop rock music since the 1960’s, when he played in garage beat group Ekos, later being also a member of psych groups Objectivo and Heavy Band; in the 1980’s, he played with Rui Veloso, with whom he also played in the 2000’s, as well as with Ala dos Namorado) and Zé Moz Carrapa, who would later later play with Sheiks, Salada de Frutas and Ala dos Namorados. These three musicians were playing regularly with José Cid at this time, and together they’ve recorded also the much sought-after “Vida (Sons do Quotidiano)” EP, which is a delightful prog-rock suite in 12 minutes about life and death.

What you get here is a contemplative and smooth prog rock record, which you don’t see around everyday! Be advised that you won’t find any of these tracks in any other record, as they were only released on this single. Don’t lose your chance of getting this obscure gem!
