Der Klassikkatalog ist besonders reich an schönen Aufnahmen des e-moll Violinkonzertes von Mendelssohn. Aber Viktoria Mullovas Einspielung ist unübertroffen, und sie wird hervorragend von Marriner und seiner ASMF begleitet. Die Interpretation ist von großer Wärme und dennoch frisch. Der Moment, von dem so viel abhängt, die Vorbereitung auf die Ankunft des zweiten Teils des ersten Satzes, enttäuscht nicht. Tatsächlich tritt die schöne Melodie mit äußerster Natürlichkeit und am Anfang des nachgebenden Solo-Arpeggios hervor. Mullovas Tenuto in diesem Moment ist hinreißend. Sie formuliert auch den langsamen Satz am schönsten, Marriner sorgt dafür, dass er nicht verkümmert und bewegt sich überzeugend im Mittelteil. Das Finale tanzt und sprudelt fröhlich. Die Aufnahme ist eine der besten von Philips, was bedeutet, dass die Balance natürlich ist; die Klangfarbe des Soloinstruments lässt keinen Schluss auf ein übermäßig nahes Mikrofon zu, ist aber stets voll und schön, ohne dabei in irgendeiner Weise an Präsenz zu verlieren. Das Orchester hat sowohl Blüte als auch Gewicht und die nötige Brillanz.
The Classical Catalogue is particularly rich in fine recordings of the Mendelssohn E minor Violin Concerto. But Viktoria Mullova’s account is second to none, and she is splendidly accompanied by Marriner and his ASMF. The performance has great warmth and freshness. That moment on which so much depends, the preparation for the arrival of the first movement’s second subject, does not disappoint. Indeed the lovely melody arrives with the utmost naturalness and at the beginning of the falling solo arpeggio. Mullova’s momentary tenuto is ravishing. She phrases the slow movement most beautifully, too, and Marriner ensures that it does not languish, moving on the middle section persuasively. The finale dances and effervesces gleefully. The recording is one of Philips’s very best, which means the balance is natural; the solo timbre does not betray an excessively close microphone, yet is consistently full and beautiful, without in any way lacking presence. The orchestra has bloom as well as weight, and all necessary brilliance.

Elman still plays with charm and elegance ... In this batch of pieces, where the encore wags the concert, so to speak, Elman and Seiger combine war-horses and novelties in captivating manner. I was charmed by the exotic "From San Domingo", by Arthur Benjamin, with its echoes of guitars and popular songs. Charles Miller’s "Cubanaise" ... (its) vivacious rhythms and sonorous middle section are most appealing. Perhaps the item that most listeners will fall for is Elman’s arrangement of the so-called "Canto Amoroso" by Sammartini, an encore which Elman has made peculiarly his own. - Gramophone
