Hooking up with the Greenwich Village poets Tuli Kupferberg and Ed Sanders and drummer Ken Weaver, Stampfel and Weber (a/k/a Holy Modal Rounders) became part of the Village Fugs, who were at least as strange as the Holy Modal Rounders, but more interested in playing rock music. The Village Fugs' debut album, The Village Fugs Sing Ballads of Contemporary Protest, Point of Views, and General Dissatisfaction, was released by the Broadside subsidiary of Folkways Records in 1965 (this is the pressing we have here). The group simplified its name to the Fugs, and the album was reissued by the independent jazz label ESP as The Fugs First Album. ESP initially rejected the band's second recording as obscene, and they followed instead with an album called The Fugs, which broke into the pop charts in July 1966 and reached the Top 40 during a six-month chart stay. (The Fugs First Album then belatedly reached the charts and peaked in the Top 100.) With that, ESP created one of the first advisory stickers ever made for a record ("For Adult Minds Only") and finally issued the intended second release as the Fugs' third album, Virgin Fugs (1966). ***
All we can say is this: this is (in the best sense of these words) the most abrasive, crude, subversive, in-your-face, nihilist, anarchist, way-way-left-of-Trotsky, assault on establishment known in U.S. history. Compared to this, MC5 and Stooges sound like Mantovani on Prozac.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) The album comes with the original booklet still intact.
(d) Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist (except as second pressings, on ESP label)
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER
THE COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

- Cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker) in one small area not covered by the shrink wrap (nothing significant)
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
