VILLAGE ROMEO & JULIET - DELIUS FELLOWSHIP - 12 RECORDS
- Recorded under the auspices of the Delius Trust, these are 12 12" recordings on the UK HMV label with a prologue and 3 acts of Romeo and Juliet known as the 'Village Romeo and Juliet'. This is an opera by Frederick Delius, the fourth of his six operas. The composer himself, with his wife Jelka, wrote the English-language libretto based on the short story Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe by the Swiss author Gottfried Keller. The first performance was at the Komische Oper, Berlin on 21 February 1907, as Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe. Sir Thomas Beecham first conducted the work at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London on 22 February 1910. The US premiere was on 26 April 1972 in Washington, D.C While the opera has rarely been staged, the orchestral interlude between Scenes 5 and 6, "The Walk to the Paradise Garden", is heard separately in concerts and has been recorded many times. Scene 1 starts with 'Pull Hard Old Fellow' with D Dowling and F Sharp as Manz and Marti, Scene 2 is Come Vreli Come featuring children and written in pencil on the sleeve is 'last half superb'. Scene 3 is How Strange The Wind Sounds and portrays the Youthful Vreli, a black fiddler, Manz and Marti and on it goes. The orchestra is the Royal Philharmonic conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham - feel free to ask me questions but there is too much to document in one listing. The recording lasts for 1 hour and 44 minutes and the owner has written notes on the sleeve about the settings.

- The records are nearly all in E condition and are contained in a nicely bound 12" album. It looks like the original cost was either 30 pounds or dollars I can't tell.
- The labels are fine.
