VINKO GLOBOKAR / ROMAN HAUBENSTOCK-RAMATI

ETUDE POUR FOLKLORA II / SYMPHONIE "K" LP

Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft

Rare 70's original DGG avant-garde series collection, presenting the works of Roman Haubenstock-Ramati & Vinko Globokar.

Some info on the release:  A real killer!! Original 1st pressing on German Deutsche Grammophon Avant Garde series -on the same series that also released works of Mauricio Kagel, Cornelius Cardew, Franco Evangelisti, Leo Kupper, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Roland kayn, Luigi Nono, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Gyorgy Ligeti and more-. The 4th series of Avant Garde (with purple covers, like this one) are by far the most scarce and hard to find, released in a really very small quantity and most never re-released on vinyl, cd or any other medium!!

2 far out pieces, psycho-acoustics experimental freaked-out and weird are found on this record. First Vinko Globokar's "Etude pour Folklora II", a kind of psycho-analysis of memories of yugoslav folk music in certain musical choreographic situations. Several elements are underlined: throaty singing (which reminds the vocal experiments of Demetrio Stratos or Inuit Eskimos), mechanical movement and breathing, Dvocnice, gusli, tapan and zurla (types of yugoslavian folk instruments). Members of the New Phonic Art (of which Globokar was the basic member) play folk instruments like Tapan(big yugoslavian drum), 4 Gusli (one string fiddle played with a bow), 8 Dvojnice (double wooden flutes), 1 Tambura (plucked instrument with three strings), 1 Darabuka (Arab drum played with the fingers), 1 Zarb (persian drum played also with the fingers), horns and trumpets. Then comes Roman Haubenstock-Ramati's "Symphonie K" a montage of small orchestral particles with simultaneous playing of several layers of sound. One of the best and most unique records in the Avant-Garde series of DGG!! Highly recommended!!

Vinko Globokar is one of 20th Century's most important improvisors and composers. His composer works have been released from DGG Avant Garde series, Harmonia Mundi, BASF, FMP (Han Bennink, Peter Brotzmann, Moshlang-Guhl, Yoshi Wada, Michael Waisvisz, Hugh Davies, Radu Malfatti, Stephan Wittwer), while he was a founding member of the great improvising group New Phonic Art back in 1969 and recorded a couple of records with them on Wergo and Deutsche Grammophon. As a performer he was specialized in trombone, but had a wide knowledge of other musical instruments too. He inspired composers as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel and Luciano Berio to write works especially for him. A highlight is considered Kagel's "Atem / Morceau de Concours".

Roman Haubenstock-Ramati was a composer and music editor who worked in Kraków, Tel Aviv and Vienna. Haubenstock-Ramati studied composition, music theory, violin and philosophy in Kraków and Lemberg from 1937 to 1940. Among his teachers were Artur Malawski and Józef Koffler. From 1947 to 1950 he was head of the music department of Kraków Radio. From 1950 he was a professor at the Tel Aviv Music Academy, where he also led the setting-up of a central music library. In 1957 he was awarded a six-month stipend for the Academy for Musique Concrète. From 1958 he was an editor of new music for Universal Edition in Vienna. In addition he gave guest lectures and composition seminars in Tel Aviv, Stockholm, Darmstadt, Bilthoven (the Netherlands) and Buenos Aires, and from 1973 held a professorship at the Musikhochschule in Vienna.

Condition: Vinyl and cover lie in mint- condition, vinyl looks super clean and plays perfectly, while cover lies in pristine shape, with minimal edge wear and the only "defect" of it being unglued, but as you know this can easily be fixed.
