Recorded August 10, 1954.

The first of the EmArcy recordings of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet, this 1954 released album features trumpeter Clifford Brown, drummer Max Roach, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell (Bud Powell's brother), and bassist George Morrow in fine form. High points include "Stompin' at the Savoy," "I Get a Kick out of You" and Brown's ballad feature on "Ghost of a Chance." Classic music from a legendary group.

Two years after this album was recorded, in 1956 after an informal gig at a Philadephia store called Music City, Richie Powell and Clifford Brown were being driven overnight by Powell's wife Nancy to an engagement in Chicago. During the dark rainy night Nancy lost control of the vehicle on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, heading for Cleveland, and in the early hours of June 26th all three occupants perished, cutting short these two brilliant careers.
 
This is an extremely rare, hard-to-find original pressing of this monumental album, especially in such remarkable condition. One of the last albums recorded by these giants of bebop jazz.
